Well, I'm getting ready to do the news diet, I know, up until now, I'm a news junkie and am not yet ready to fast. I'm going to only read the comics, my favorite part of the paper, and skim the rest of the paper. I am going to quit watching the local news every night. I have already given up on the national news, about a year ago.

So I'm posting this as another pledge to myself. It is said, things are easier to do when you have partners.

So, partners, thank you for your support and encouragement (in advance.)

Hiya, Artist.

Welcome to the Brave New World of Truth! Adios to the Scared Old World of Appearances!

Just to share some thoughts, while so much of what is labelled "news" is fear and scare-city, there is a great deal of news available on the creative plane. To each his own, is the best guideline. I find a wealth of creative and inspirational and down-right exciting news on the business page... The sports page, while rooted in the competitive plane, is also a great place to see creative visualization, excellence, and a dedicated focus to success and efficacy... The book review, cultural sections, movies and other areas can all be mined for use-filled information once you know what YOU are looking for, and what serves YOUR best interests.

One samm but ppowerful thing I did was suggested to me by a friend: I switched my home page from the New York Times to Google.

Whoa! What a wonder-filled shift in my daily persepctive. And, the Universe being as playful as it is, within a week of changing my home page to Google, they up and offered me a wealth of ways to customize my home page. Now I get only and exactly what I want (some inspirational quotes, a Buddhist Thought for the Day, local movie times, etc.) Now, rather than being loaded up with "news" about fear and war and violence all over the world, "news" that others choose for me-- I CHOOSE my content.

And the best thing to happen is this: I often start my day by using that sweetly beckoning white space on my Google home page, the one where you can ask any question you can imagine-- and the Oracle will take you to places and answers beyond your imagination. It's great to start my day with a quest-ion, a search, and a discovery.

Right now is the best (and only!) time to be alive.

Happy trails!

I never ever liked the news or current affairs and naturally steered clear of it most of my life. I used to love the comics. Interestingly, I thought there was something wrong with me, and that I should "grow up" and take an interest. Same with politics. It was always like pushing a great deal of sh** up hill!!

As I got older I felt the same, but made myself take an interest and watch the news and was able to make "intelligent" conversation about topical events etc. My husband and family are very much oriented to and focused on politics and world events and the news - my mother-in-law cannot go without the paper every day, although it makes her very unhappy!! (she's 85 now) ... it's almost like an addiction. So, to feel part of things I felt the need to sound knowledgable and be able to partake in discussion on current affairs.

LL9 was such a relief to me!! Maybe I can be a "grown up" after all without paying all that attention to the news!!

Artist,

The news diet can really be a freeing experience. Filtering out the new stuff leaves so much more space for the creative stuff!

Greetings Rebecca,
How do I set my home page to this forum? That's a great idea. I have been looking for a substitute for msn news and here it is.

Diane, if you're using Internet Explorer, you just click Tools, then Internet Options, and the first tab that comes up ("General") has a place at the top where you set your home page.

On my iMac, I use Safari and Flock. To set your home page in Safari, you just open a webpage in Safari, then choose Preferences from the Safari menu and click General. Click Set to Current Page. (Or you can also type the address for the page you want to use in the "Home Page" box.)

In Flock, you click the Flock Menu, then Preferences and a little box comes up where you set the home page.

Other browsers have similar options. Just check the Help file.

I wanted to let you know that I've read mainly the headlines in the paper for the past week, unless theheadline sounded happy or inspiring, then I would read the article. Of course I still read the comics Smile. I feel great!

I had a difficult time at first, 5 o'clock would come and I'd head over to the TV to turn it on, but always stopped myself and got busy on something else to take my mind off it.

I can do this! Thank you SOGR for helping me overcome my news addiction!

I agree with you Ruthie. You can do this!! You are making great progress! The fact that you feel great is a clear indication of your progress! The news fast gets easier over time. If you get stumped for something else to take your mind off the news, visiting the forums is a great way to add positive and uplifting thoughts to your life! Of course you already know that but I was thinking - turn off the news and turn on SOGR.

How about printing it out and taping it over your TV screen. Big Grin

When I did this lesson, I was prepared to "jones for the news" that I was not paying any attention to, but actually, I surprised myself by not missing it at all! And I was also surprised to actually be caught up on things by others who haven't taken this LL yet. Ha. Just as promised. I had already stopped watching and reading all news except on the web, and only headlines to see what is going on in general, but this took me the whole way, and was enlightening. I do notice that when I decide to spend a half hour "catching up" on world news, I don't feel as happy as I did before, after. A clue!

Thanks for your post.

Well, now, let's think about THAT. Wink

Does watching that show cause you to feel good? Better than before watching it? Those images? Those stories?

Pay attention to your feelings and what you are giving your attention to. If you give your attention to ANYTHING, you will attract that sort of thing, experience, etc.

I guess I should clarify this.

I really don't watch it, just take a glance when the main male character is onscreen. I've got a little crush Red Face

When I did the news fast it was sometimes difficult because I am curious at times.

So, I have other things around when I get curious so that I dont click on the news.

This course is completely changing my reading and watching habits...up until a couple of months ago, I was an avid reader and watcher of crime thrillers - the more tense and gruesome the better. However, shortly after completing LL9 I found myself 'not wanting to' read or watch these things - completely unconsciously I had taken in the lesson that these things did not make me feel good.

There was some enjoyment obviously or I wouldn't have done it all these years, but I didn't feel good afterwards...and suddenly could see that they were filling up my mind with negative images and thoughts. So, now I've moved onto chick-books and chick-flicks! It is a slightly perturbing change...but a happier one.

Love
