Hi,
A question to all. My biggest challenge in all these prosperity teachings - especially Wally's is being able to "look beyond appearance." Up until this time, I have found it so difficult to think "great job" when I'm in the middle of a very tedious job. I can hold my ideal vision for a while, but as the day winds down, I lose steam and can feel that boredom and looming discouragement starting to set in. Any tips from any of you guys on how to keep that white burning desire flaming while surrounded by damp, stagnant water? LauraR Silver Spring, Maryland,USA |

Hi Laura.
I hear ya. I've been in the same job for six years and thought I had mined it for everything it's worth, until Wally entered my life. I have found several ways to deal with what had become a drudge. First, it helps to re-visit the well several times during the day. I periodically stop what I'm doing and spend a few minutes doing something fun or inspirational. Visiting the SOGR forums and reading the wonderful stories is one quick way to recharge. I bring CDs and headphones from home and listen to Rebecca, or Aerosmith, or Danny Kaye (!), or whatever I'm in the mood for, while I'm working on something repetitious or tedious. If the task requires more brain power, I listen to instrumentals without lyrics. At home I'm building a library of books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, etc., that give me a lift. At home and and work I surround myself with photos, magazine clippings, objects, swatches, and anything else that reminds me of my vision. I tape pictures and SOGR pages to the bathroom walls, the kitchen cabinets, etc. I carry a pocket-sized SOGR in my purse and can pull it out between tasks, classes, errands, etc. I do mind-mapping using a large artist's pad and colored pencils, adding lots of color and little drawings to bring my vision to life. I tape these to the walls too. At the office, I try to infuse my work with creativity, like designing custom cover art for reports and manuals; taking a digital camera and getting out of the office to collect images I can use in my work; coming up with snappy titles to my e-mail messages; printing work schedules on brightly colored paper - anything I can think of to spice up the routine. There is a huge payoff for working in the Certain Way. Adding more personality and flair to the work is fun and it gets you noticed. Going above and beyond is satisfying and it fulfills the SOGR requirement to be larger than your present position. So if he leadeth you beside still waters, use this time to be grateful for all that has come before and to prepare for what comes next. The water you thought was stagnant is soaking into fertile ground. Something grand is about to germinate. Laurie |

quote: Hello LauraR, Thank you for your post and for everyones reply's. Most inspiring! Thought I might add my thoughts about this. The answer to your question is of course given in the SOGR. Working myself in a job that I was once inspired (but no longer inspired)to do, I found myself asking the same question as yours. And here is the answer I found whilst listening to the audio book (something else you could do while your working - but I do like Aerosmith lol). While you are working, hold to the thought that the work you are doing NOW in your prent place is helping you to get what you want (your clear mental vision). Keep to the faith that you ARE getting it and be grateful. Use your present enviroment as the means to get to where you want to be. Put all power into each action by mentally referring to your vision as you do each task. Do all you can each day in a perfectly effecient/effective/successful manner, but do not over work or try to do two days work in one day. More than fill your present place. Do not leave anything undone that may be done that day. Give to each person you come into contact with the thought they are getting MORE from you. Hold to the thought that you are an advancing personality and that you ARE getting what you want. And your present job is helping you to get it. When you put ALL POWER into each act by holding your vision, you will automatically give off the advancing vibe. The thought or vision of the things you REALLY want while your working will give you inspiration to get all your work done. And you will be surprised how the time seems to fly by. All the above is in the SOGR only Wally puts it much better. Read the book over and over again. Join the PG Course, it's fantastic!! and you will eventually start to really 'get it!' Hope this helps? My sincere gratitude to you for bringing this up, it has helped me to clarify my own mind too! To infinity... and one step beyond, for all!! Blessings! Ash |

Thanks, everyone, especially, Laurie and Ash - those are great tips!! Most appreciated. My other problem is getting enough sleep at night. When I don't (most of the time during the week - because I get up early to exercise, review my vision, meditate etc.) - then my energy also lags and then it is harder to give the impression of increase moment by moment when I fall asleep. Also, I guess I feel a bit guilty when I take 5 minutes to read these forums or do something more in line with my vision. But, I love the ideas about filling the workspace (which I have a bit) with lots of color etc., etc. and doing whatever it takes to get the energy up. It's too bad you guys aren't in my work environment. I've got to rise above the rather dry environment I'm in.
Anyway - thanks. And, yes, I'm enrolled in the genius course which I'm working through - on lesson 17. Have a great rest of the day! LauraR |

Hello again,
Trouble sleeping? Is that going to bed too late, or not being able to get to sleep when you are in bed? Cure No.1 - Go to bed earlier Cure No.2 - (This works for me) When I go to bed with a 'buzzing mind' and can't sleep, I think to myself 'Ok, I'm gonna just stay awake as long as I can'. After about ten minutes, I promptly fall asleep! Reading a book can help too (depending on the book). I can't think of any good reason why anyone should feel guilty for wanting to help themselves. Your dedication is showing a good example to everyone. Just make sure you don't waste time by procastination. Keep to the thought that what you are doing IS in line with your vision and IS helping you to get there. As Wally says, you can't act where you are not. Just my view of it. Im still mastering the principles myself. Hope it helps. Thanks for the post! To infinity... and one step beyond, for all!! Blessings! Ash |

Good suggestion I got from someone that I have tried and works when you find you have some trouble getting to sleep... go and do something constructive. Read, clean up the kitchen, figure out what you will wear tomorrow, or whatever. Rather than focus on not being able to sleep, do something that needs to be done or something you enjoy. It really works. You will find that you are not tired in the morning. If you just can't bring yourself to getting up and doing something else, while you lie in bed, keep trying to keep your eyes open rather than closed. I find this helps me get to sleep nicely. Keep trying to stay awake and you will undoubtedly fall asleep much faster. Why? I have no idea. Can't say for sure if it will work for you, but it has for me. Also, you might want to go back to a few of the life labs that speak to you. I know you know which ones I mean. I do it all the time whenever I get stuck. You are right on track. Stick with it, it gets better with each day.

Thanks, Leslie and Ash for the additional tips. Actually, most of the time, my problem is not fallin asleep (although that happenned last week). My issue is that often by the time I finish dishes, get clothes and lunches ready for the next day, it's 10:30 p.m. and I arise @ 4:15 a.m. to meditate, re-read my goals, do a bit of spiritual reading, and then exercise. 6 or fewer hours of sleep isn't enough so that often at work, I can start nodding off. Yesterday was terrible, I lost focus several times because I felt too tired. Other than this, I'm in very good health, am fairly fit and am slim.
Thanks, Laura |

Our bodies and minds are incredibly efficient and adaptive - when we get our limiting beliefs out of the way.
When I look beyond APPEARANCES, I see that 8 hours is an arbitrary number and a social norm that most of us accept without question. The "need" for 8 hours of sleep is a limiting belief that is absolutely within our power to change. Sleep is gratifying and can be very pleasurable, particularly just before rising. We may WANT more than 6 hours of sleep. Do we NEED more? If we tell ourselves we do, the consequence is that we program ourselves to feel deprived if we get less. We can change the quality of sleep by changing our beliefs. When I go to bed, I tell myself that I will wake up feeling refreshed and energized. I express thanks that my body can rest and repair very efficiently in a few hours. Any time beyond that is a blissful indulgence for which I am deliciously grateful. What, when, and how much we eat has a big impact on the need for rest, but that's a whole other subject! And no matter how little sleep you get, it's impossible to nod off during the day if you're excited about your life! Happy Friday! Laurie |

Hi Laura -
Since you mentoned desire, why not take a look at the posts under a recent topic I started called "Desire" (gee, what a surprise) under the "It's All Relative" heading. I received some pretty interesting and insightful answers. The posts shouldn't be hard to find; they're from no more than week ago..... Best of luck! Woodstock |

Laura,
My immediate thought of "looking beyond appearances" was the experience of having a baby. While expecting, the woman suffers from morning sickness, a very unpleasant time, moving is difficult, she has to get different clothes, she becomes very fat, she gets stares and snide comments, she has to go to the doctor, she can't pick up her other kids, her hormones change and she becomes grumpy and out of osrts. Yet none of this matters because while all this is happening, she is preparing the baby's layette. She is "seeing beyond appearances" to what is really taking place--a new child is being born, a new life is coming into the world. And that is joy. If you can put up with nine months of unpleasantness for happiness, you can change the way you think about your work and look ahead to your clear mental image. Best of luck. Wonder |

Dear Wonder,
Right on! And the absolute perfect analogy for creating our desires since we must let them gestate in our hearts, minds and bellies before they come into being in our world. Every parent, man and woman, has experienced the thrill of anticipation, waiting those months, wondering, dreaming, imagining, and at the same time preparing, clearing the way and making space for the new baby. Creating the desires of our heart calls these very same actions into play. As I said before, perfect analogy. Perfect! Thank you, and blessings galore, Kate www.mayyoubeblessedmovie.com Dedicated to blessing one million people in the next one hundred days "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine." |

Thanks Kate,
we do sometimes have to think of our desires as if we are expecting, they gestate for a while, we ponder them with happy thoughts, prepare, and pretty soon, they arrive, all formed from heaven. Neat. Wonder |

Hi, Laura--
My first thought in regards to "looking beyond appearances" was connecting to my concept that all of life is symbolic, just like dreams. Just as one uses symbols to interpret dreams, maybe it would be helpful to use the same process in "interpreting" various life situations that come up. Just a thought. Peace to you!---Margaret |

Grand Poobah (more fun than "Administrator") |
quote: Laura, I don't think you have to do that at all. No point in lying to yourself. Mr. Wattles says that the job you have now may not be the one you want, but you can use it to get to where you want to be -- including work that is more fulfilling and financially rewarding if that's what you desire. (And he gives instructions on that.) Were I in that place, I think I'd not try to tell myself I loved the job I didn't love, I'd just follow his directions to find ways to put INTO the work whatever was missing so that I could "more than fill my place." If the work felt like it had no "heart" to it, I'd ask myself how I could put MY heart into it. You know, if you look around with the intention of finding it, you can see some great examples. Just the other day I was leaving a big supermarket, having used the little digital scanner thing to check myself out. The woman who had the job of standing at the head of all the scanners to help confused people, answer questions, and so on was amazing. She'd probably been on her feet for hours (considering the time of day) and was dealing with people often not at their best (frustrated, and so on). But she was just SO upbeat, smiling, energetic, answering each person with an obvious intent to solve his or her problem in the most efficient, friendly, satisfying way. I just stood and watched her for a few minutes and she never faltered one bit. So now think of the people in similar positions who perform that kind of customer service job as if they'd never actually comprehended the title of the job -- unsmiling, seemingly determined to make life difficult for others, acting as if a question was a personal affront or a big imposition. (Know what I mean?) Which of those people do you imagine feels better all day long and at the end of the day? Which person feels like the day just drags on and on? Which person obviously knows -- whether by study or just intuitively -- how to enjoy his or her life in all kinds of circumstances? And, really, in most cases, which one would appear to have better opportunities to advance to work that pays better (if that's what he or she desires)? The ENERGY of the two kinds of people is startlingly different. And that energy is all-important. My "radar" (RAS) is tuned to find these people and bring them to my attention -- because it just makes ME feel better to see them in action. I pick up on that energy and it makes ME feel more energetic right in the moment. So the thing is, ANYONE can do the same or similar in ANY job. And that's part of how you can "more than fill your place" so that before long you just have to bust out of that place into something higher, better, bigger. Instead of thinking "great job" when you don't, you can start by looking for ways to MAKE it a great job -- for now, right this moment. Being of SERVICE to others -- customers, coworkers, employers -- is a good start. And it's ultimately more satisfying, too. Before long, you may find your feelings about your job changing immensely. Sometimes that happens almost immediately. There are some great stories in this forum of just that sort of thing happening. Love & blessings, and, of course-- EXPECT Success! Rebecca |

Thanks, Rebecca for your comprehensive reply!
Actually, you stated very well what I knew deep down in my heart after reading Wattles. Sometimes, one just needs to hear these things confirmed by a live person! And, yes, I've been focusing on ways to put the impression of increase into what I am currently doing. It all comes back to putting lots of positive energy into one's vision and acting from that energy, in this moment - now. And I was listening to your recording of the book this morning on the way to work and was re-invigorated by it. Keep up your excellent work! I am so grateful! Laura |

Thanks, everyone - Doubletaurus, Candlekate, Laurie, Wonder, IndigoLA for your inspirational and very practical responses!!!!
You're right - I think that I keep feeling guilty about not getting the socially accepted 8 hours and that makes me subconsiously succumb to sleepiness during the day. One must stay enthusiastic!! Also- thanks for the having a baby analogy. That is useful as well. I must get to work now and give the impression of increase! LauraR |
